THEY ate in near silence. Darius and Louis stared at each other without saying anything. Tyrone’s mother looked even more tired than usual, so she didn’t seem to want to drive any sort of conversation. Tyrone wasn’t in the mood for chitchat, so he kept quiet too. He missed the spirited banter and talk around the table at the farm, though. They always discussed interesting things. Even if they just talked about the benefits of certain crop rotations, it was certainly more interesting than this.

“Are you boys going out tonight?” his mother finally asked. Darius shrugged.

“No. I’m staying in tonight,” Louis answered, looking pointedly at his brother, obviously answering his mother’s question and sending a message of some type to Darius. Louis finished his plate and carried his dishes to the sink before leaving the room. Soon Tyrone heard the back door snap closed. Tyrone finished eating and got up as well. His mother looked to where Louis had gone, and Tyrone sighed as he placed his plate in the sink and then followed his brother out into the evening air.

He didn’t have to wonder where his brother was because he could hear the clang as he worked on the old Chevy that had been parked next to the house for two years. Louis had driven it home, turned off the engine, and the dang thing hadn’t started again since. Louis had always said he was going to fix it up, but the thing was just his frustration release and probably nothing more.

“You ever going to get this thing running again?” Tyrone asked as he approached Louis, who was bent over the open hood.

“It runs,” Louis said without looking up. “Don’t want Darius to drive it.”

“Then why leave it sitting here?” Tyrone asked, and Louis straightened up and closed the hood. Louis shrugged and opened the door, turned the key, and the engine roared to life. After a few seconds, Louis shut off the car and got out, walking over to where Tyrone stood.

“Do you think I could do what you did? Go to that college and maybe learn more about how to fix cars?”

Tyrone smiled. “Yeah. I think you could do whatever you set your mind to. You’d need to get your GED first, but I could help you study.” Louis had dropped out of high school halfway through his senior year. Well, he’d actually just stopped going and never graduated. “What brought this on?”

Louis shrugged again, but didn’t look away. “I think it’s time I took responsibility and helped Mama like I should. One of the guys at the Chevy dealership says he might be able to get me a job in the shop, but to be a mechanic anymore, you got to learn about the computer systems and stuff. I gotta do more than just lay around here and be nothing.” Louis wiped his hand on an old rag. “I got a buyer for this thing, so I’m selling it.” Louis lightly punched Tyrone’s shoulder and walked away.
